The first quarter square occurs when Moon aspects 90 degrees to the Sun. It occurs during a waxing phase, which is positive for growing things in life. It’s not like the waning phase. That takes energy away and is good for getting rid of the weeds in your life. This lunar phase allows us to look at our internal motivations and drives.
What do we need in order to feel like we’re going in the right direction and have some positive structure in life?
The Sun is in the 10th house from the Moon, naturally giving it more strength from the point of view of our emotions. The Moon is in the 4th house from the Sun, giving our feeling nature more strength from the point of view of the soul or what we are consciously aware of (light of the Sun) in life. It’s a time to make key decisions for the next month ahead, the beginning of next year, 2021.
Themes to Look Out For With This Cycle:
- The need to “get somewhere” fast in order to escape low self-esteem, life’s pressure or general feelings of anxiety
- Picking needless battles and fights to feel emotionally secure or full
- Not seeing our own emotional desires and drives clearly and acting on our emotional waves too quickly
- Feeling mentally burnt out (Mercury Combust Sun) and emotionally agitated (Moon/Mars Aries) on too much stimulation (Rahu)
So…What Do I Do?
You’ll find it absolutely necessary to trust your gut at this time. The signs and planets associated with linear left brain intelligence are stronger now; empiricism and measurable, well-defined knowledge rules the day here. Moon in Aries is known for its impulsivity and acting out on whatever it feels in the moment. With Mars, a friend to the Moon, situated in the same cardinal sign, it merely accentuates anger and driven-attitudes to getting our needs met.
Emotionally, we’ll really want to vent, make brash accusations or confront others from our own place of emotional insecurity and vulnerability. Be careful to not throw all of your frustration onto other people. When the Sun moves through Capricorn, our sense of self esteem, personal power and positivity gets taken down a notch. Sun feels weak in his enemy sign, Saturn. Many people feel more depressed during the winter season.
The Capricorn feels a lot of fear, anxiety and pressure to put their ideals to work, the hard gruesome nitty-gritty work. Aries, on the other hand, wants to feel good now, ASAP, immediately! It wants to charge forward and do something to feel that sense of security and fulfillment. This is where the struggle comes into play. First quarter moon phases show internal needs coming into conflict with external desires or the themes that we are consciously aware of due to the light of the Sol, Sun. The question is what must be worked out so that our lives can grow and flourish effectively?
Where is this happening in your chart? Does it have to do with your angles, places of action, succedent houses, your support in life or the trick houses (6th, 8th and 12th), where we work on our spiritual self. Let’s just say, for example, that the Sun is in your 1st house and the Moon is moving through your 4th house. This quarter square is about finding a balance between a purposeful, inspired, unique and well-managed life path and a positive, self-sufficient emotional foundation in life.
Keep this in mind…
During this lunar cycle, Venus is the only planet on the other side of the nodal axis, while still technically being in the same sign as the south node. Every other planet is on the side of the southern nodal axis: Ketu in Sagittarius. The planets work to emphasize the south node’s lessons: letting go of old beliefs and cultural or religious identifications.
Venus is in trine aspect to the Moon — despite being a natural enemy to the Moon — showing an ease of enjoyment that comes from becoming more clear about what we need in order to feel the fiery passion and sense of aliveness. Letting go of unhealthy Venusian desires and attachments will help to provide more emotional clarity to how we organize and structure our lives.

Here Are Some Solutions!
- Do little things every day that make you feel like you have more power and control over your own life (Pluto makes us feel like we’re out of control)
- Practice a few minutes of gratitude or thankfulness (Jupiter and Saturn makes everyone unhappy, fanatical and without hope)
- Take an emotional break (Aries is incredibly active and impulsive) and find a way to have some fun and relaxation or enjoyment
