Which astrological house system is the most accurate? Which one is the “right” one to use?!
There are dozens of house systems to use in tropical astrology (and sidereal), each delineating house cusps at notably different degrees.
Personally, after having studied astrology for over 15 years, I have to be honest with my feedback.
Popular Astrology House Systems
Placidus: widely used time-based system that breaks down if a person is born too far north or too far south.
Whole Sign: the most simple house system that treats the entire zodiac sign as the house.
Equal House: takes the ascendant degree and makes every following house start at that degree (30-degree segments).
Koch: popularized in Germany and is a derivation of Placidus.
Regiomontanus: divides the equator into equally spaced parts and puts them onto the ecliptic (what we see here on Earth).
Campanus: divides the prime vertical into 12 equal parts.
Porphyry: simple system that splits 4 quadrants of the zodiac into three equal 30-degree arcs.
Morinus: divides the equator without using the MC point.
Topocentric: strict, local astronomical precision that is similar to Placidus.
Use The Astrological House System that Speaks to Your Intuition
Use the house system that aligns with your intuitive mind (higher mind).
Most astrology is not scientifically replicable or accurate enough to be raised out of its lowly regard as a “pseudoscience.”
In order for it to work, one must use intuition.
To activate this deep part of the mind, you must connect with the chart itself.
The “wrong” house system won’t let you do that.
There’s a reason why Placidus houses continue to be used by so many astrology enthusiasts and natal chart calculators worldwide.
Placidus works – both in practical terms and in terms of connecting to one’s intuitive mind.
I still use Placidus for psychological astrology, but switch to the whole sign houses when implementing timing techniques.
Many famous astrologers, like Noel Tyl, prefer the Koch house system.
That’s their preference. Personally, I’ve found Koch and Porphyry houses to be hit or miss.
Qualify the House System Based on Your Personality
Cultivate your sense of curiosity. Be like Mercury.
Experiment with different house systems and see if they resonate with you.
Change Your Mindset and Perspective
Don’t be like most astrologers.
A lot of astrologers share the personalities of accountants, very Mercurial, petty, narrow-minded, perfectionist, absolute in their beliefs, and purists.
“It MUST be this way,” they’ll shout. “And if it isn’t, I don’t want to hear about it!”
If you’re one of these types of fixed, puritanical, rigid personalities, you probably won’t like this blog post, or even bother to read it in the first place.
My approach is non-committal and pragmatic. If it works, I will use it. If it doesn’t work, why waste time with it?
This mindset applies to non-Western techniques, like those of Jaimini or Persian astrology.
I’m not interested in debating “right” and “wrong” house systems with people.
I don’t even have time for the petty ego-battles concerning which astrology is “the BEST astrology,” exemplified by the idiotic Vedic vs Tropical debate, which ultimately goes nowhere.
I have repeatedly tried to make Sidereal astrology work for me. I just can’t do it. Granted, I wasn’t trained in it. It’s also not part of my caucasian European-American culture or lineage.
In fact, every “reading” I would give with a Sidereal chart would be 100% inaccurate because I am still accustomed to looking at a planet in a sign FROM the ascendant point and getting an accurate description. Boom. Done.
That didn’t include analyzing hundreds of yoga combinations across the Kundalini and divisional charts before coming up with a single accurate statement.
Speaking of fanaticism and rigid obsession with “right” versus “wrong,” this trend is absolutely seen with modern astrologers’ love of whole sign houses.
Whole Sign Astrology: The End-All-Be-All Online Trend
Whole sign houses are the new fad for internet astrologers.
It has become an absolute obsession for younger astrologers.
Many of them claim it’s “the best, most accurate house system of all,” simply because it was used in antiquity.
Their presumptions are totally false.
The Truth About Whole Sign Houses
The whole sign house system wasn’t used because of how accurate it was. It was used because of how easy it is to calculate. Ancient astrologers did not have computers to offload tedious calculations and chart modeling. Every ounce of it was done by hand.
Today, computers and calculators save us so much time and eliminate a good portion of human error.
However, there is a deep utility to the whole sign. Implementing timing techniques, like Chara Dasha or Profection Years becomes straightforward.
For broader timing techniques, I use the whole sign houses. For granular personality-based interpretations, I rely on Placidus.
Astrology is Governed by Uranus and Mercury: Use Their Qualities
Astrology is governed by Mercury and Uranus, and to a far lesser extent, Jupiter.
Uranus is all about breaking the rules, trying new things, and extending past the boundaries of orthodoxy. Mercury is about learning, testing, and iterating.
In other words, try these astrology charts out for yourself and see what works and what doesn’t.
